As adults, we often seek to have orthodontic treatment to improve the appearance of our teeth and face. However, there may be other reasons to seek orthodontic treatment. These can
vary from choosing to move teeth prior to crown or bridge work, improving the health of teeth and gums by positioning them in an easier position for cleaning, or to improve function such as making it
easier to chew and eat.
At The Cherrytree Dental Care, we offer orthodontic treatments for many reasons and we offer different systems for each individual case. These systems range from clear, tooth-coloured
fixed brackets that are glued onto your teeth and then move the teeth into more desirable positions with the aid of a wire extending through the brackets. These cannot be removed and must be
cleaned while fixed to your teeth. They can provide quicker and predictable treatments and the tooth-coloured brackets are very discreet, although can be more difficult to remove and
depending on the bite, they may not be suitable for the lower teeth as this can cause wear of the opposing upper teeth.
The second system is the transparent removable aligners that fit over your teeth and can be removed for cleaning. This type of system can be more discreet, however can take longer
to achieve the desired result.
We offer free 15 minute consultations with our aesthetic dentist to discuss your treatment needs and possible treatment options. The team will provide you with relevant information and
will take your moulds (impressions) and photos to assess your case fully prior to providing you with a full treatment plan. Once you have considered all the information, you can then start your
treatment.
It is possible for most adults to have orthodontic treatment as age is not a limiting factor. The type of treatment options available to you will depend on the type of bite you have,
the position and the condition of your teeth and gums. Any cavities or gum disease will need to be treated before you can have any elective orthodontic treatment.
At your consultation, your dentist will be able to tell you how long each treatment may take, although this can vary depending on other factors, such as increased breakages of the
brackets and slower movement of the teeth, especially with root treated or traumatised teeth. With more crowded or complicated cases, you may need to have some teeth out; this can be arranged with
our experienced dental surgeon, so you do not need to be referred elsewhere for your treatment.
It is not painful to have your brace fitted, however it is common to have some tendernes for 3-5 days after this initial appointment and similarly you may experience mild
tenderness after adjustment appointments. Your regular appointments will be approxiately every 6 week and your dentist will also arrange for you to have your regular check-ups during your
orthodontic treatment. This way, your teeth can be checked for any decay and your gums can be examined for any gum disease. Once your brace treatment has been finished, it will be necessary to wear a
retainer. This may be a removable clear retainer to wear at night time or a fixed, custom-made wire retainer behind your front teeth to prevent any undesirable tooth movements.
At The Cherrytree Dental Care, we will provide you with a retainer of your choice as part of your whole orthodontic treatment at no extra cost; any breakages or replacements thereafter
will need to be charged separately.
It is also important to clean your fixed brace regularly and The Cherrytree Dental Care staff is here to help you understand the procedure well and demonstrate how to use the
recommended products. Our cosmetic dentist will check your cleaning each time you come in for your appointments, to help you maintain your teeth healthy during your orthodontic treatment.
We are always happy to help, so let us know what you need and we will aim to assist you in whatever way we can!

Diet advise following fixed orthodontic brace:
- Avoid chewy foods, such as chewing gum, toffees, haribo-type sweets
- Avoid fizzy drinks including carbonated water, but if you must, drink through a straw
- Make sure to cut-up foods into small, bite-size pieces so you can avoid biting with your front teeth; cut-up apples, carrots and other 'hard' foods
- Avoid pizza crusts, french baguettes, hard crisps
- Ensure to stick to main meals and reduce snacking
- You may drink water, milk and very diluted squash throughout the day, only have fruit juice and other drinks at meal times
-Avoid habits, such as chewing pens, chewing finger nails!
Tooth brushing advise:
- Brush three times a day for 5 minutes; morning, afternoon and evening - electric toothbrush is best, please enquire at reception for advice!
- Use Fluoride, alcohol-free mouthwash in the evening, 30 minutes after toothrbushing
- use TePe interdental brushes above and below the wire, around the brackets on your teeth
- use 'soft wax' to cushion the brackets and prevent them from rubbing and causing ulcers on your lips and cheeks
- use disclosing tablets to check your brushing if you are worried it is not very effective - the stains will show up any plaque you have missed and you can re-brush those areas
